Turning 6!

A 6th birthday party for our little man.  He wanted spaghetti and meatballs, garlic bread, and a moose cake.
We went to Trader Joe's to pick out a little party favor: chocolate wafers covered in candy sprinkles.  We got some blueberry sparkling cider to drink and I found this potted Lenten Rose (helleborus) for the center piece.
I baked a buttery yellow cake in a 9x13 pan and cut out the shape of a moose's head.  The antlers were from a felt reindeer headband  I picked up a the dollar store...take off the bells and red feathers and iron out the wrinkles, and they become presto moose antlers!  Then finish with chocolate and plain butter-cream frosting.
Then, the true success of the evening was the gift of an indian costume and bow + arrows from Grammie and Grampa.  Grammie made the headdress, vest, etc. and for the rest of the evening the boys practiced shooting their bow + arrows at their targets that have retro depictions of indian braves, teepees, and horses.
Lately we've been reading stories about Davey Crocket and Daniel Boone.  They also love Pecos Bill, Paul Bunyan, Casey Jones, and Pocahontas.  They love those stories and ask for them over and over again.  I never paid much attention to those things when I was a little girl.  It's amazing the tall tales mixed with historical figures and facts...a jumble of what men want to be and what they were.  For my boys it's about the big bears and the wilderness and the excitement of lassoing a horse right out of the clouds.
