Walton's House Sets

Ever wonder how the layout of the Walton's home was constructed?  I've tried to piece it together from watching the shows...without much progress!

This is a floor plan from Rockfish River showing the Walton's house.  It is an odd layout!  And no, it doesn't fit inside the actual exterior building.   The interior scenes and exterior sets weren't even on the same stage ; )  You can see great pictures of the exterior set at 1164 Morning Glory Circle.  I couldn't find out much about the interior scenes - I'm guessing they're gone.
Here's a drawing of the upstairs.  It's such a funny layout...that's why if you try to reconstruct the upstairs that you see in the shows it doesn't work out right (notice there's no parent's bedroom - because it was the same one used for the girl's room too)!  Now that I've seen this schematic it all makes sense : )

If you want to see pictures of the real Hamner home check out pictures at Rockfish River website!  Of course, my favorite pictures of the house are the kitchen/dining room - love that beautiful long table!  And, the parent's room - that lovely Singer sewing machine!!!
Another little bit of trivia: Ralph Waite is 5' 10" and Micheal Learned is 5' 7"
(My Babe is 5'10" and I'm 5' 8"  - that's kinda fun!)

I always loved the kitchen on The Waltons.
I've always told my husband I want a Walton's kitchen. He thinks I'm crazy. I love that big table there in the middle. It seems so practical to have that and just sit and peel potatoes and get supper ready.

Hi,
I wanted so very much to go to the Waltons. and visit the house constructed at the museum. They have the kitchen set up and I think two other rooms, how much fun is that! However I have not gotten there yet. There is a book that has house plans of tv shows such as Leave it to Beaver, the Jetsons etc. i do not know the title but maybe it will help you if you can find it. good luck.

Hi There, I found your blog searching for bud vase lapel pins (a rare thing to find) and just wanted to say- I love all of these posts about The Waltons! Three cheers to "the recipe" and to Olivia's good mothering!

I don't think the inside of the house matches the the outside. The kitchen eating area has a bay window where they do the ironing and there is also a hutch there. The outside of the house shows no baby window. There are some other issues, too. Especially with the upstairs layout. Most likely the set for the outside and inside is not the same.

Hello,
you are using the floor plan we have created for our website www.rockfish-river.com ! This floor plan is conform with the interior of the Waltons first floor - build in the Warner Bros. Studios. The house you see from the outside is just a modell for the outside shots. The Waltons were never filmed inside this building ! The floor plan shows how the Waltons house would looks like when you watch the indoor shots.

Yes! Isn't it funny to think the interior and exterior were on separate stages?! I love your floor plan! I hope you'll be making one for the upstairs too ; )

I was watching a Waltons episode and I payed close attention to the inside layout. I don't think anything is at anything except a right angle (not cockeyed like that). And the screen porch/mudroom is off the back kitchen door. There is no door where he has it.

The bay window would not be visible from the front view as it would be behind the side screened porch. Also, the door in the kitchen between the stove and counter leads to a storage area that is shown and used in a few episodes. And you are right, everything is straight angled and not cockeyed like that, and the door side screened porch area is incorrect as far as the door...there is no small hallway from the porch to the door going into the kitchen. I absolutely love The Waltons!! I've been fascinated with the house floor plans. I do believe the show was filmed in the house on the Warner and Burbank lots in CA. The biggest inconsistency is the window above and slightly to the left of the cellar doors. It's where the piano and armchair are on the inside where you see no window. It is likely the exterior shots were made there. Not sure. The house was eventually remodeled and used on the Gilmore Girls as the inn, so it had to be a whole house somewhere.

My friend just sent me your blog! Thank you for the inside layout of the house! I am building a farmhouse and am a HUGE Waltons fan. Now that I've read your bio - I'm a fan of you too! Thanks for such a beautiful site!

All the information I have about the Walton's members and the house set is from the Rockfish River site:
http://www.rockfish-river.com
There may be a way of contacting Earl Hamner through his blog too if you have questions.

my name is ross I lov he waltons house it would be filmed all interior in a studio with exterior at warners brothrs lot, also the house was destroyed by a fire so had to be rebuilt for the new television movies and this was the same house used for the dragon fly inn on the gilmour girls
tv series and that was change the chimney moved and repainted a different colour.

I don't see how to publish photos but we were in the REAL Walton (Hamner) home just yesterday in Virginia. It is NOTHING like the movie set of course and, the grandparents, on either side, ever lived in the home. If you see the interior, you'd understand why. This was a house build by the soapstone quarry company just across the street......and it is VERY basic. It is a nice house and I'd LOVE to live in it but, it's not like the TV set home in many ways.

The outside of the home reveals no child screen. There are some other problems, too. Especially with the upper level structure. Most likely the set for the outside and within is not the same.

I had a home in WVa that looked exactly identical to the exterior of the beloved Walton clans Tv home. It remains in my heart to be my all time favorite home. Every night I would tell John boy goodnight. I found your site while trying to find a Walton's replica doll house. Thank you for your enjoyable site. I look forward to returning again.

We are going to have an architect design a rectangular house plan based on the Walton house--we won't make the living room or kitchen have angled walls. I have an 8 ft. farmhouse table. We plan to put the fireplace in the kitchen where the woodstove sat. There will be 2 bedrooms upstairs, and the master downstairs with a mudroom\pantry on the back side of the house. The large front porch will serve as an "outdoor room."
